Jean-Laurent Bonnafé, Chief Executive Officer and Director of BNP Paribas
La Tribune – “The future of BNP Paribas is nessarily one that is post energy transition

“It is corporations that have made the most progress since 2015 towards the zero carbon target by 2050.

Society’s energy transition necessarily involves offers of services, techniques and technologies that only companies can design.
Our role as a bank is to support them on a daily basis and to offer them financing solutions to build the future.

We must remain humble and lucid on the work accomplished so far, and also very aware and mobilized in the face of the magnitude of the task that we must collectively accomplish.”

The world entered a new era towards climate action in 2015 when the United Nations published its Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement set a target to become a net zero emissions world from 2050.

Net zero means ensuring human-led activities do not add new greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere that are not being compensated. Achieving this objective is key to keep global warming at well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels as set forth by the Paris Agreement. Practically, this means drastically reducing emissions immediately and over the next 10 years while working at developing effective compensation mechanisms.

All sectors have engaged in transitioning toward a low carbon economy and finance plays a key role in accelerating the effort. Sustainability-linked financing is becoming more mainstream and increasingly offers issuers more competitive pricing opportunities compared to standard financial instruments.
